Dear all,

Greetings on the close of our first rainy VLD! Thank you all for being so prepared, and for pitching in to help one another when needed. We have a strong Elementary team, and Lori and I were proud to see such thoughtful and quality learning being planned via multiple means today. Thank you all.

We do not know what weather the weekend will bring - be safe and dry everyone!
Thank you’s (Anyone to thank?  Let Lori or Keryn know)
  • PRIYA!!!  For all your fabulous support, training and expertise to have us all so well prepared for our VLD today!
  • Tiffany for bringing VLD training to the GTL attention a week or so ago- we were so much better prepared because of your reminder!
  • The grade 2 team and students would like to thank Ms. Ula for organising a Skype call with author Lisa Haske. The book was great and she was wonderful in answering our kids' questions.
  • Vanessa and Elliot would like to congratulate Ms. Sai, for a fabulous first week on the job. Already she is doing so much hands-on work in the class with students. Sai also came into work on our Rainy Day Off to help out with grading and other logistics we asked her to help us with!  Amazing.

Family Math mornings
Next week we have scheduled Family Math mornings as a way for parents to better understand our math programs. The structure of these will start with Calley at 8:45am explaining some core fluencies etc for each grade in a parent-coffee style presentation and then parents will join with their children in class to explore a math engagement together. Dates for this are on the community calendar:
  • EY5 and Grade 1 - Wednesday 8 November
  • Grade 4 and 5 - Thursday 9 November
  • Grade 2 and 3 - Friday 10 November

Please can all homeroom teachers post this on their Edmodo page:
Family Math Mornings
We are looking forward to seeing all parents next (insert date and time) for our Family Math Morning! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to come in and learn more about our math programme and participate in hands on activities with your child. See you then!

Message from the Discovery Studios
Carl is now in between projects and knows you are all just finishing up proof reading and entering your grades and comments. He would like to offer the gift of time this week by taking your classes for a mini challenge. The students will be completing the "Gummy Bear Catapult Challenge". They will need 45 min to an hour to do it. Go to his calendar and book your time. He can take 1 or 2 classes at a time.

You can order your photos using this order form. Please pay at the cash counter and hand over the form and receipt to Cheryl or Hazel. You can access the photos here.

Missoula Children’s Theater
MCT is returning to AISC the week of November 13-17. Sign up information has already gone out to parents and many children are signed up for auditions. As with previous years, all interested children will attend auditions on the morning of November 13th. Specific logistical information will be shared next week but please be aware that relatively large numbers of children will be involved in auditions (and therefore missing class) the morning of the 13th. We expect the casting list to be completed about noon that day, and practice schedules will be set for the rest of the week. Thanks for your flexibility as students attend their rehearsals. The final performance will occur at 4pm in the FAC theatre on Friday, November 17th.

TGIF
An all school TGIF will be hosted at the Sunset Grill on November 17th. Hold the date.

Text Complexity, Why It Matters and Our Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts highlights compelling research and conclusions for the decline in literacy skills among children and adults for the last 50 years. The CCSS identifies intentionally exposing students to increasingly complex text as a critical step in preparing them for the future. Reading the first 10 pages of the CCSS English Language Arts will help frame our role as teachers of reading and clarify the rationale behind the standards.

VLD - repeat announcement
After the review of the continuity of instruction plan we want to ensure every teacher is prepared for a VLD.

There are requirements for all teachers that include a video recording to be created on the day
* EY-2, this is a welcome message for children and overview of the day
* Grades 3-5, each lesson should have a video that includes explanation of task and/or instruction
There are two options to learn how to do this; watch a video or attend face-to-face training.

Here is the video  that will help you learn the screencastify skill independently.  (Other video platforms could also be used but this has found to be straightforward).
After watching, if you now understand how to create and post a video message please change your response on the Unified Classroom Tracker Sheet.

We need your response to be updated and accurate by next Wednesday 1st November.
Anyone indicating they require help after then will need to attend one of the following session: Monday 6th - 3:50pm - 4:05pm

Have a great weekend.

Keryn and Lori
