Thank you for your work on report cards these last few weeks. We know how time consuming it is to write such detailed narratives for your students. Parents will certainly appreciate your insight about their child’s strengths and areas for growth.

From the Counselors

Transitions: Part of the international school experience is students moving; new students arriving and current students leaving. An important step in transitioning in an international move is having an opportunity to say farewell. Please carve out some time for your students to share leaving messages with each other, using Jamboards/Padlets or other developmentally appropriate tools. For the leaver, a healthy closure is important. It is also important to take some time to be thoughtful of our students who are staying and continuing at AISC. Take time to check in with your students  and ask them what actions they are taking to say goodbye, how they feel about it and what thoughts do they have about making new friends in the upcoming school year. Stayers are key members in our community.  Further information on stayers is found in this article Globally Grounded:  6 Steps to Being a Successful Stayer in an International School And this AISC video on Goers Stayers and Newbies could be a fun addition to  Morning Meetings, for the older grades.

And if you need something just for fun, to make you smile and feel happy about the world!

Thank you to all of the teachers involved with MAP testing. We recognize it took a lot of patience, flexibility, and management but in the end, the two weeks of virtual testing were successful. We want to thank Priya V. for her help and support with technology and proctoring as well as all of the members of the tech team who stepped in to support and problem solve issues that came up with the students. A special shout out goes to Dave who managed the entire rollout from start to finish (and it’s not yet finished!).

July 2021  EAL Jumpstart Program

It's that time of year again! AISC is looking for educators interested in being a Classroom Teacher at this year’s July Virtual EAL Jumpstart Program. Our July Jumpstart Program will run from 12-23 July 2021 (9 am - 2 pm). This 2-week program helps new AISC students acclimate to school routines while learning foundational English words, structures, and phrases needed for academic success.  Our program will be virtual again this year.  Hence this requires interested teachers to have dependable and stable internet connectivity at home as access to AISC campus may not be available depending on lockdown restrictions at the time.

If you are interested in being an instructor of this July 2021 EAL Jumpstart, please complete this form by 19th May 2021. We will be selecting 7 teachers for this program, possibly more based on enrollment. Please note that a stipend will be paid to those who volunteer/and are selected.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mr. Ryan McFarland.

Once upon a time, we lived in a world where Fairy Tales could also use video calling technology. Bursting with familiar characters, from Big Bad Wolf and Little Red to Goldilocks and Baby Bear and Prince Charming and all the classic princesses, these short plays are as fresh as they are funny! With delightful humor for the whole family, this show is sure to end happily-ever-after, even if the fractured fairy tales don’t!

Summer Learning Opportunities

It is exciting how many of you have signed up for at least one of the TCRWP Summer Institutes 2021!  This is a fantastic learning opportunity to learn and grow. If you have not signed up yet and are still interested, it is not too late!

Looking for a learning opportunity with more flexibility and less commitment than an institute? Check out TCRWP’s Asynchronous Courses. Designed to last approximately 5-6 hours and priced around $100 each, these courses might be just what you are looking for to spice up your summer professional development.

Please fill out a PD request and submit it to Lynn if you’re interested in attending any of the TCRWP’s PD opportunities.

From the Counselors

We have many goodbyes to say…..goodbye to students, colleagues, friends, and parents. This is even more complicated because many of us are doing this while grieving the loss of a loved one to COVID or the tremendous stress and panic of having COVID ourselves or caring for someone with COVID. For those of you in these situations, we humbly send you our heartfelt healing thoughts and support.

As international school staff our goodbye “odometer numbers'' increase every year. The end of the school year never stops being sad. And just like we have regular maintenance on our vehicles after so many kilometers, we also can take care of ourselves after many goodbyes.  But….how to say goodbye now?  Who has already left? Who is in what time zone? Who is coming back? We are consumed by report cards, packing, getting COVID tests, and taking care of others with COVID. (A big thank you for your kind and caring wishes while I recently recovered from COVID- these kindnesses made all the difference).

Between Michele and I we have had 20 complete moves to new places. Within these moves are many goodbyes - entire schools, neighborhoods, countries, dear friends and family. We know that it is true that the best new beginnings come after thoughtful and plentiful goodbyes. We find that remembering to thank the vegetable seller or the delivery person you've seen a couple of times as well as the rich thank yous to coworkers helps us move well. Because of the pandemic and lock down some gratitude may have to be expressed in our hearts and emails as we can’t meet in person.

Each thank you and goodbye helps us remember how much we were a part of the community. As people who have stayed behind while colleagues and friends left, we also know that gratitude given and received grounds us and gives us the push to continue this work.

At times I’ve been tempted to leave without a word in the middle of the night as it all gets overwhelming  but then I'm reminded of the amazing people I am leaving. What a gift to ourselves and to others to let people know they make a difference.

To our dear ES colleagues we say thank you for all you have done this year pushing ahead when all seemed lost….  making every day on Zoom and Seesaw meaningful and exciting and like home. You may not have met your students in person but they will long remember you and know you well. Your colleagues will think of your smile, encouraging words, and bits of humor. To those of you who are leaving AISC and not returning we say thank you for your incredible work and dedication. You will be remembered - your voices and laughter long heard and held in our hearts.

Stay safe and be well! Reach out to any of us if you need anything.

Regards,

Lynn, Dave, and Elliot
