Wednesday, November 23, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Have a wonderful long weekend whether you are staying here in Chennai, or heading off for this extended weekend.  Please know we are very thankful that you are here in the ES with us, and for everything you do daily to make this a wonderful place for all our students.

Remember to thank others too!  We head into a very busy time of year, so remember we are all working from places of good intentions, and as Ralph Marston said What if you gave someone a gift, and they neglected to thank you for it-would you be likely to give them another? Life is the same way. In order to attract more of the blessings that life has to offer, you must truly appreciate what you already have.”

Working with Data
For the next faculty meeting (November 30th) each team will be able to work on an area of curriculum of their choice, with strong encouragement to work on an area including data analysis.  Here are some suggested areas:

  • On demand analysis and implication for future unit teaching points/small group instructions
  • Pre/post bridges assessments
  • Analysing existing (or recent) running record data and thinking ahead to next guided reading groups
  • Looking at current and upcoming social studies/science unit.  How are student responses or formative assessment being used to determine further lessons/engagements for the students

Running Record Data
As we near the end of the semester, we would like to enter the Running Record assessment data you have into our Learning Analytics programme.  Please make sure all current data collected this year is up to date for all of your learners by Monday, December 12 on your spreadsheet.  Please then share these with Cheryl.

Home Learning Draft policy
Just a heads up that the homework committee have a draft new personalised homework policy.  This will be previewed with PCA reps for any additional perspectives to be considered before we unpack this as a faculty.  After we have done this and heard everyone’s feedback, then it will be distributed to all families.

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
Our ES choir will be singing at the Christmas Tree Lighting at the Hyatt Regency on Monday Dec 5th.  In a change from previous years, the hotel will be providing food and soft drinks only.  We encourage as many teachers as possible to attend to support our students.

Emergency Drill
As per the schedule, our second emergency exercise for this year will be conducted on December 01st  (Thursday) at 09:00hrs.  It will be a bomb threat evacuation situation.
Situation: Evacuation to Safe Haven due to bomb threat incident.
Please refer to the email sent on Wednesday 23rd.

Inquiry book club reminder - from Rachael
As discussed in the November 2nd Inquiry session, we are excited to offer three book clubs to facilitate and spark discussion, learning, and integration of conceptual understanding in our classrooms.  Please see the surveys below to indicate interest.  Please know space is limited, as well as meeting day and time majority interest will be honored. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you on this exciting initiative!

Hour of Code - From our IT team
Each year the largest single learning event in history gets bigger, and we hope to get even more learners involved. From December 5-9, children and adults all over the world, including our school, will devote at least one hour to learning how our digital world works.

Coding is constructive play, or what we call hard fun. When we code we use critical thinking skills such as design, analysis, evaluation, and problem solving to be creative while having fun. With code we can be entrepreneurs, artists, communicators and collaborators to name just a few.

We will continue to offer you and your students opportunities during regular class time as well as lunch and after school. There are connections to nearly all content areas, even programming synthesized loops in music and writing choose your own adventure stories.

We invite learners from all grade levels to participate and share in the fun. Here are some ways you can get your learners involved.

  1. Book some time with your Tech Coach to discuss ways to integrate coding into your curriculum to enhance a lesson or unit.
  2. Book a slot in the HS or ES/MS CIC and bring your learners there to explore stations set up with different challenges
  3. Encourage your learners to visit the CICs / FAC Cafeteria at lunch for some organized fun (ES to the CIC, MS/HS to the FAC cafeteria)
  4. Simply send this link to your kids and give them some time explore. https://studio.code.org/

Dear all,

Thank yous
  • All 53 of you who completed my new principal survey - muchly appreciated!
  • Hilary, Priya and Jet for all the work with Bernajean’s successful visit last week
Karen and Rachael for the great Inquiry in the co-teaching classroom workshop
  • Carl for delivering a photography workshop with MS students
  • Rachael for putting together a comprehensive faculty PD on F&P reading assessments
  • Alex and Dylan from MCT, and all the TAs who assisted with escorting students
  • All teachers who supported the 4pm performance - so great to see so many of you there!
  • Everyone for their flexibility with MCT rehearsals this week!
  • Jet for facilitating all the preparation for Mini-Nesa

NESA Math PD: Message from Calley
The session will be best suited to teachers who need Level 1 or 2 with Conceptual math, and it will focus largely on implicating the Practice Standards in lessons.  Calley thinks it should be very hands-on.
Calley will be attending and will go through the eyes of the "beginners mind" to see what she can re-learn and emphasize with staff for our February session. If a cohort attends with her, perhaps we would be able to collaborate.
Interested faculty should let Keryn know via email.

Faculty Meeting next Wednesday
Mini NESA!  Refer back to the email sent out by Jet.

We really appreciate your participation!

2016-17 Calendars
These have been placed in your mail cubbies; please collect.

Cafeteria Changes
After surveying student council members and hearing a strong desire for a quieter lunch time with more space and seating, we are going to pilot having the 5th graders eat lunch in the FAC cafeteria. This will begin next Monday and run until winter break, at which time it will be evaluated. Third and fourth graders will continue to eat in the ES cafeteria, as usual. Chandra will supervise the 5th graders; all teachers normally on cafeteria duty will remain in the ES cafeteria.

Fifth grade teachers, could you send your students to the ES cafeteria 5 minutes early on Monday? Lori and Keryn will transition them to the FAC, discuss routines and expectations, and supervise the first few lunches.

Fountis and Pinnell Reading Assessments
As was mentioned, use of the new F&P kits is completely voluntary this year. If you or your team would like continued practice or further professional learning, feel free to call on Rachael.

Here are some answers to questions that arose from Wednesday’s session.

Will additional kits be ordered for next year?
  • Yes. We know that grade 2 needs a 3-8 kit, and that grades 3-5 need K-2 kits. For now, borrow nicely from your neighbors; Lori also has an extra K-2 kit in her office that you’re welcome to borrow.
What will you collect at the end of the year?
  • The same as previous years:  the independent reading level for each child and the paper copy of the most recent running record (be it TC or F&P).
If a child makes multiple errors on the same word, is that counted as an error each time he/she says it?
  • “Each missed word in the book counts as one error each time it is misread. Therefore, if a child misreads the same word eight times, it counts as eight errors. The exception to this rule is proper nouns...Proper nouns are unique in pronunciation and are often difficult” (Assessment Guide, page 136).
When coding and scoring my reading records of English language learners, is it considered an error if they leave off -s endings, add -s, or misuse the possessive tense?
  • “Errors are coded and scored the same for all readers. However, the analysis you do should guide appropriate placement decisions by looking beyond the numbers to consider the thinking that was done compared to the expectations along The Fountis and Pinnell Literacy Continuum, not just the errors made because of language development. You should make placement decisions for instruction based on your analysis and not on accuracy scores alone” (Assessment Guide, page 141).
What about mispronunciations? How do you score them? P 25, 27
  • … many English language learners do not sound precisely the same as native speakers… Phonetic variations that do not interfere greatly with comprehension or fluency can be ignored. Make judgments based on your knowledge of the child. (Assessment Guide, page 25)
A note about comprehension with English language learners
  • As you engage in this process with ELLs, remember this is a standardized assessment procedure that assesses reading comprehension, not language. Apply the same standards as you do to the assessment of native English speakers… At the same time, remember that ELLs almost always understand more than they can explain in English…. When you assign a placement level, consider any evidence you have of the child’s understanding. You might decide you can place the child at a higher level than the standardized assessment reveals… (Assessment guide, page 27).

* Since so many of you are asking - we will also get the new Reading Kits to you to ‘unpack’ and explore soon too!

Friday, 11th November, 2016

Dear all,

Between Digital Storytelling with BernaJean and Silambam performers at this morning’s assembly, another full on week was had!  Thank you everyone for allowing disruptions into the regular day as these are not only what memories are made of, but also what allows student learning and thinking to grow and expand in so many new ways.

These disruptions will continue next week - in the form of MCT. All classes have been mailed their list of students auditioning on Monday.  See below for more information.

Auditions
  • Monday Nov 14, from 9:00 am to 11:00 in the FAC theater.  All children need to be walked over and ready by 9am. Sign up list here.
  • The maximum cast size is 50-60; so over half the children who audition will not be chosen.  Please help manage this with your children - doubtless there will be disappointment amongst those not selected.
  • Children will find out if they were selected for a part around lunchtime on Monday
  • Those selected into the cast will be needed for rehearsals for the rest of Monday afternoon.

Rehearsal Reminders
  • Rehearsals will be scheduled by role, and this schedule will be shared as soon as we have it
  • Everyone will need to be flexible in escorting children to and fro to the FAC rehearsals, and with children missing from lessons.

Performance
  • Friday November 18 at 1:30 pm for all ES students/faculty
  • 4pm for parents/public
  • The show is approximately 60-70 minutes in length – there is no intermission.

Thank you’s
  • Anna for organising the Silambam performance for today’s assembly
  • Lauren for all her work in getting the Wellness Oasis up and running for us to enjoy
  • Rachael, Fer, Anna, Lauren, Calley, Lily, Ron, Barbara and Nancy who have helped with contacting potential candidates for next year to provide perspectives on life in Chennai and working at AISC

Feedback for Keryn - as per Monday’s email - this survey will be open until Monday morning
Thanks to those of you who have already filled this out!
If you haven’t had a chance yet, I would appreciate feedback from everyone to help support my transition in as new Elementary Principal.
This feedback form has 3 questions that I’d love each of you to fill out :)

Faculty Meeting Next Week
Next meet all ES faculty will meet in the FAC Cafeteria together for a few announcements and then we will break into two groups; specialists in one and homeroom/EAL teachers in another. TAs, while you aren’t typically expected to attend sectional meetings, we’d love for you to be a part of this training.
*Specialists, please be prepared to really finalise the curriculum course/unit descriptions.
*Homeroom, EAL teachers and TAs - the Fountas and Pinnell reading kits have arrived.  Although these will not be formally replacing our reading assessment resources until next year, since many of you would like to begin using these sooner, we will be literally unpacking the boxes and exploring this reading resource together.

India Month Survey
From Bindu and Anu - you are welcome to provide feedback about the celebrations and activities from India Month.

Student Council
Toy Drive information for all to please share next week with your classes.
