Friday, February 23, 2018

Dear all,

Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes, I feel very fortunate to be here with all of you! Many things coming up in the next few weeks; happy reading!

Lockdown Drill
As you look ahead on the calendar, our next emergency drill is Thursday March 8, at 10:45am. This will be a lockdown drill. Our expectations for this are very simple; lock the doors, turn off the lights, and gather quietly in a place where you are at least visible. Next week Lori and Keryn will come around and check in with what your designated space is.

In light of the recent events in Florida, if children need reassurance of why we carry out this drill in India, please know it is a very real difference to why lockdown drills are carried out in the US. The likelihood of us going into lockdown would be because of an intruder, not an armed intruder. These two articles here may help you frame conversations with your students.

Track and Soccer field Construction Project
Alankrit sent an email announcing this week regarding the upcoming track and soccer field construction project. This will begin on April 1, and therefore the field will be unable to be used from then through the end of the year. We are developing alternate plan for recess play and PE spaces, and will share some ideas at our Faculty Meeting next Wednesday.

Faculty Meeting next Wednesday
We will be talking about Operation Appreciation and Inquiry. The structure of the meeting will be different than usual, with us spending time in the CIC, the Design Studio and doing an Inquiry Walk. Early next week, we will update the calendar invitation indicating which space everyone should begin in. As there will be movement and hands-on activities involved, you do not need to bring anything to the meeting.

ES Vision of a Learner
Since report cards highlighted so many of our students vision of a learner attributes, here is your chance to nominate some students for a second round of vision posters. Click here to add names.  Anyone can add to this, specialist or homeroom teachers.

Student - Teacher Feedback
Next week Grade 3-5 students will be completing their student teacher feedback survey. This survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Homeroom and EAL teachers will work together in triads to cover each other so these surveys can be completed without the teacher receiving feedback in the room.

Students should carry their device to specialist lessons next week. (Once surveys are done, no devices are needed to go to these classes.)

TAs please plan to spend 5-10 minutes in one Art, Music, PE and IS lesson for each of your two classes.  Ideally, this should be at the beginning or end of each class.

WL feedback will only be given from Grade 4 & 5 students who spend all year with one WL teacher.  This will happen on Monday, and also only be in Spanish and French; Lori or Keryn will be present for 5-10 minutes of these classes on Monday.

Links will be emailed directly to each student next Monday morning.

 Thank you’s…
  • From Megha and Tiffany - To Ron & Lori: Thank you for your consistent support in dealing with behaviour and discipline issues, especially during the height of report card season! It means a lot to us that we could lean on you and feel so supported.
  • Morgen, Bindu, Jet and Nicole for representing the ES at our planning summit this week.
Meet AISC - Linda Gerberich - Elementary Counselor

Like a number of the AISC teachers, Linda started her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She served in the Philippines and worked with teens who could not afford to go to school. Linda has been a school counselor for 25 plus years in both international and US public schools. This is her first year at AISC and she came from working at an international school in Helsinki, Finland. Helsinki and Chennai are very different! Linda is originally from Ohio in the US. She loves that she gets to work with and know so many students and parents and teachers, because she enjoys the opportunity to turn a student's day around and help make it better. If Linda had a secret power, she would be able to speak any language!

April 6 - let’s hope it’s not a full moon - very early advance notice
Friday April 6 is going to be an all hands on deck day!  On this day we have a clash between Adaptive Schools (approx 10 teacher's out), Erma (6 teachers out), Keryn/Linda out in Korea for training and a few other teacher booked for personal leave.

Friday 9 March - TGIF
Save the date - more information and details to follow!

Sunday, March 4, 7AM-10AM

Dear Faculty,

Delegates of the ECIS Library conference have already commented how amazing our ES section looks. Take a chance to wander some spaces you don’t regularly visit - you will be as impressed as our visitors are! Thank you everyone.

For those attending the conference this weekend, enjoy. For those presenting, we wish you well! Everyone else, happy long weekend.

Baby boy Connelly
He arrived early Sunday morning; Calley, Ross, Rowan and Juni are thrilled to welcome Bryn Corbett to the family. Congratulations!

An Ode to Our Teachers (from a responsive classroom sub!)
Last week, I taught fourth grade.
The memories will never fade.
I couldn’t believe
each day when I’d leave
The mess of the classroom we made.

The students kept it real.
I wasn’t sure how to feel.
Did they not know
How much they would grow
With Rachael behind the wheel?

I am woke.
It isn’t a joke.
I’m in awe of our folk.
Our staff that teach
It’s no day at the beach
And so, to each--

You are remarkable.

Thank you’s…
  • Hilary for presenting at the ECIS library conference this weekend.
  • Jet, together with Kirsten, for all the hard work put into organising this spectacular event.
  • Kay (from Donna) for managing the Meet Manager and Colorado Timing System at the Raptor's Swim Club Time Trials on Saturday. Your help is always so appreciated.
  • From Ross: I would like to thank all the folks have offered to bring meals and/or spend time with Rowan and Juni during this exciting (and exhausting) time in our lives. Thanks additionally to the 4th grade team for being fantastic. Last but not least, thanks to Fiona for keeping things afloat in my absence.
  • Daphne and Natalia for their spontaneous expertise in helping 3TF for the class' first kitchen experience.
  • Carl (from Rachael) for compiling a list of loose parts for the upcoming play strand field trip.
  • Joseph, Priya, Clinton and Ken for the outstanding EY-Grade 2 Art Exhibition in the atrium (which will remain up for viewing until the 23rd).
  • Jack for inaugurating the students vs faculty soccer match today
  • Jane, Lori, Jack, Elliot, Vanessa, Keeley & Marcus for their fine display of sportsmanship and superb soccer prowess (2-0 to the teachers)
  • Salome, Ron, Linda, Julia, and Janna for being part of the cheer squad to watch teachers vs students
Faculty vs Students Soccer Game
Today, Jack, inaugurated our first Faculty vs Students Soccer game. This was open to students in Grade 4 and 5, and was a lot of fun. Final score was 2-0 to the seven teachers who bravely played an outstanding game against four different student teams, who each played one quarter.
Congratulations to Lori, Jack, Elliot, Jane, Vanessa, Keeley and Marcus! And Salome, Linda, Ron, Julia and Janna for cheering along!

Advanced responsive classroom (part 2)
We have booked tentative dates in early September 2018 for Part 2, the Advanced Modules. We will likely be focusing on ‘Responding to misbehaviour’ and ‘Effective Communication Strategies’, as well as having an observation day where the visiting consultant will observe implementation of R/C within classrooms, shared spaces, playgrounds etc.

This visit will include the 30 teachers who participated this week, and at least one day for all other ES faculty too.
All resource/books can be found on their website - https://www.responsiveclassroom.org/
If you would like to order a book from your PD funds, please include your name and book title here, and we will compile a master order.

Visiting Authors - from the CIC
Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger from Outspoken Literacy are this year’s visiting authors. They have toured many international schools and received high accolades for years. We are very happy to have them here!

Sara will be working primarily with ES while Michael will be mostly with MS/HS. Please click here below for two documents.
1.      The schedule for your team.
2.      Your workshop choices. There are 28 different ones to choose from depending on the needs of your curriculum. Please email Jet what sessions your team wants by the end of Tuesday, February 13. Sara will choose sessions for teams who do not decide by that date.
Thank you,
Jet and the Library Team

Summer Literacy Institute Workshop
Looking for summer professional development?  Registration for reading and writing workshop institutes at Columbia University in New York City open on Wednesday February 21st.  You will find more details on the TCRWP website and in the summer institute brochure.  Please ask Alex if you have additional questions.

Bathroom Etiquette!
A request from maintenance to please have a conversation with your students about bathroom behaviour - both the hand wash and sanitizers are being inappropriately used/wasted over the last few days.  Please all talk to your students about this. Thank you.

Visiting ASL (American School London) teachers
Alan is organising a half day visit next Thursday 15 February for 5 ASL teachers.  They will be touring around the ES in the morning and then spending time in Deepa, Ula, Tiffany, Melissa and Janna’s classes.

Meet AISC - Amritha Thomas - Speech and Language Pathologist

Amritha’s job as Speech and Language Pathologist allows her to do 2 things that she loves - teaching, and working with kids. The broad smiles children break out into when they realize that they are being successful is priceless. Amritha loves travelling and have recently developed a liking towards photography! One of her favorite ways to unwind is to untangle things like Christmas lights and yarn. She is the oldest of 3 children; her Dad is a Plastic Surgeon and her Mom an English teacher.

Amritha did her schooling in Oman and came to India for her Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree in Speech and Language Pathology & Audiology.  Soon after that she got the chance to go to Australia for 5 years. In 2007, Amritha found herself back in India and interviewing for the job at AISC. If Amritha could change lives with anyone it would be her Grandfather - he was a Freedom Fighter and one of India's first Member of Parliament post- Independence. She would love to see India and its potential through his eyes!

Happy weekend everyone!

Warmly,

Keryn & Lori

Friday, February 02, 2018

Dear Faculty,

The sun is shining, it’s lovely out - so have a wonderful weekend everyone! Next week is a big one with 30 faculty in Responsive Classroom training. Please be mindful of this, pay extra attention to the new duty and specialist schedule, and help each other out when needed. Thank you!

Thank yous…
  • Jack, Sobha and Jane for three wonderfully fun field days
  • All teachers for their support of these field days
  • Grade 4 for all the meticulous planning for their sleepover tonight (and for sleeping at school!)
  • The grade four team would like to thank Dee for all she does in supporting our team. We're especially grateful for all the work she's done in organizing the sleepover.
  • Thank you everyone (from the PE team) so much for helping make our Field Days go so well!  The days were a great success only because of everyone’s preparation and hard work during the event.  Everything you did is very much appreciated and we would love to hear your feedback on how to improve for next years’ Field Days.  Here is the link: Field Day Feedback Form
  • Huge thank you to Priya and her team of teacher gardeners; Amy, Kay, Kristina, Morgen, Ula, Fer, Megha, John, Ross, Janna, Julia - please use #adoptagarden #aiscelementary to post pics too!
  • Thank you to those who have signed up to pay it forward and be a buddy for our incoming class of 18-19.
Korean Parent feedback
We had a productive meeting with all our KPA reps on Tuesday. We discussed some key points of cultural diversity, as well as took questions and feedback from the parents.
Overwhelmingly their message was this: Do as much as we can to very strongly encourage children to speak English at all times in the classroom. We agreed to share this message with you all. Please know you have the support of the Korean community in being stronger in your encouragements to make this to happen.

NGOs feedback
Last week several NGO educators visited our school and shared the following observations that struck them:
  • It is so clear that Inquiry is driving everything in the classroom
  • The relationships between teacher and students are amazing with high respect on both sides.  It is obvious kids want to learn.
  • So many teachers and adults in every classroom!
  • Collaboration is highly valued here.
  • The amazing value of having coaches to see the whole picture of the school and to help make planning for each grade unique
  • Teachers sharing best practice at the planning meetings showed clear common goals and no one dictated the style or way of how teachers should do something
  • Importance of children asking questions and allowing this to lead classes
  • The curriculum is so fluid; focused on children, differentiated, and clear understanding are supported in every way
Everyone can celebrate these successful observations!  Thank you.

Responsive Classroom:  Mon - Thurs 8:30 - 3:30pm
Thanks ahead of time to everyone for their flexibility and attention to all the the changes that will accompany this opportunity. Here are some links that you’ll need to keep track of logistics:

Subsand Special Classes (no changes from last week)

DutySchedule All TAs and teachers not in RC, please check this document carefully. Some people have retained their regular duties. For others, it is different. The easiest way to search for your name is probably to do a 'command F' (apple) or 'ctrl F' (PC). There shouldn’t be any conflicts between teaching and duties, but let me (Lori) know if you find a clash.

Please be aware that this special duty schedule covers Monday through Thursday, and all regular Friday duties go back to normal.

DutyLocations and Responsibilities If you find yourself in a new location, you can check out this link to see where you should be and what you need to do.

Again, all regular specials classes and duties will run on the above schedules from Monday through Thursday. Everything goes back to normal for next Friday.

Wednesday Sectional Meeting next Wednesday 7 February: 2:30 in the BBT
For Elementary Teachers (not in Responsive Classroom Training)
Topic: Intro to Responsive Classroom
  • 6 Guiding Principles
  • Core Belief (including morning meeting)
  • 4 Domains
Tutoring info for teachers - all tutoring relationships/agreements need to be confirmed directly by Keryn. Going forward, and to protect the integrity of the programme, tutoring needs to be based on an actual academic need and recommended by a teacher. Parents who may approach you to request tutoring as a form of after school care should be informed of this policy. This is also in the handbook for their reference.

Friendship day (this message was also sent to Room parents)
February 14th is Friendship/Valentine’s Day and one of the 4 agreed upon events we celebrate and recognise within the Elementary school. As parents have requested a shared timeline, any classes planning on decorating classes can happen anytime from Friday 9th.

Happy weekend everyone!

Keryn & Lori
