Friday, October 29, 2021

A huge thank you goes to Bindu and Liza for all of the organization, planning, and coordination of a fantastic India Week. We know planning this wasn’t easy in the virtual world and we appreciate all you both have done to make this a memorable experience for the students. We’d also like to thank all of you who volunteered during the week. We had teachers/TAs lead activities in morning meetings, working with students during homeroom or Indian Studies class time, creating asynchronous videos, and reading aloud to classes. All of the events throughout the week were a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate our host country.

We’d also like to thank all of you for preparing your room, planning for the first few days, keeping up with team meetings, volunteering for India Week activities, and all of the gazillion other things that have been on your plate recently as well as teaching virtually. It is so wonderful to see everyone back on campus and will be even better come Monday when we can see and hear the sights and sounds of students again.

Supervision Responsibilities

The supervision schedule has been recently updated so please double check the schedule if you have an assigned duty next week. Please also read carefully through the supervision responsibilities document. Everyone should be aware of the expectations for supervising students during different parts of the school day especially if another faculty member is absent and you are asked to fill in. One item to note is that individuals assigned to arrival duty will ring the bells based on their assigned location which is different than individuals who will ring the bells at the end of each recess. The bell locations to be rung at the end of recess are included in the supervision responsibilities document. Please reach out to Dave if you have any questions.

ES student list - virtual/in person - what we found out from parents during conferences

  • HRTs, please update the above list as needed.

  • Specialists, this will give you an idea of which students will be virtual in each class (remember this may change)

  • HRTs/TA - please communicate directly with specialists if you have a student move to virtual at the last minute (quarantine purposes, for example) so they can plan accordingly. A simple email in the morning will do.

  • Note: For dismissal, you don’t need to worry about any older siblings. Older siblings in MS/HS will meet their younger siblings outside the ES gate.

  • Ask us any questions. As always, feel free to email or text Lynn over the weekend.

AISC Guest WIFI Password for grades 3-5

Students in grades 3-5 can access WIFI by using the guest network with this password: vlaisc20

Device configuration for 3-5 graders will happen the week of Nov. 8th. HRTs will get a direct email with more information.

From the Counselors

1.We are grateful to you, for working from campus for the first time, perhaps in many months, and leaving your children at home even though it might have been difficult.

2. We are grateful to you for organising and preparing your classrooms this past week.

3. We are grateful to you for demonstrating patience and persistence while learning the hybrid system.

4. We are grateful to you, for the time and thought you have given to establishing your new morning routines in your own families.

5. We are grateful to you, for teaching in a mask, on Zoom, in a classroom that might not be the perfect temperature, or may be noisy or dusty.

6. We are grateful to those of you who are worried or nervous about getting COVID, but have learned some coping strategies that help you worry less.

7. We are grateful to see all of your beautiful faces on campus, together, with your energizing spirits and smiles, ready to welcome our students next week. We missed you all and are so glad to be together again.

** One more helpful hint from HS for the first few days: wear comfortable clothes, comfortable shoes, a mask that is comfortable, and drink as much water as possible!

Our hearts and admiration go out to all of you.

Homeroom teachers: your new class schedule

Please start to work on your new class schedule. You’ll want to get that out to students by Thursday, Oct. 28th so virtual students know when to join the class via Zoom. Please make sure you include specialist Zoom links in your new schedule. Remember you are not bound by 35 minutes blocks. Please plan to have reading, writing, and math daily with SS/Science multiple times a week. Dave and I are happy to look over any schedules.

How do we get  local classroom supplies?

Most stationery items are available at our Purchase office and can be ordered with an email to purchase@aischennai.org. You can arrange to collect from the purchase office once ready.

For other orders, please fill out a Purchase Order form (PO) which is available in our office. This will be approved by the Principal and Business office.

If you have details - such as the item can be purchased from an online platform, and the cost, photo etc, please attach a printout of the details with the PO.

Note from IT

Welcome Back ES!

The classroom iPads are all ready and need to be picked up by your TA's from CIC. The box contains iPads, chargers, and extension cords.

From the Counselors

Ways to help students adjust to being on campus:

  • Check in about how students are feeling. Here are some printable charts

  • Acknowledge feelings. If they say they are worried and provide reminders that everyone at AISC is here to help them stay healthy. Help them refocus on what they can control rather than worrying about what they can’t.

  • Encourage empathy. Students have had different experiences during the past months and will have different feelings about coming back to school. Some classmates will have seen friends and others not. Encourage everyone to be inclusive of all students. Some students will remain virtual- discuss how we can make sure to include them.

  • Encourage optimism. Tell some nice stories about being on campus and seeing others. For the students who will stay virtual encourage everyone to stay connected and develop special routines to help them feel included.

  • Include mindfulness in your day (counselors are happy to help with this).

  • Remember 3 Rs… reassure, routines, and regulation.

Reassure safety, establish routines, and regulate emotions: help manage unpleasant feelings with deep breaths, brain breaks, quiet time and emotional check ins.

Responsive Classroom First 6 Weeks in November? (from Elliot)

The week of November 1st is not the first 6 weeks of school, and yet, it kind of is. Consider these first few days just like the first 6 weeks of a new school year. Although you have established virtual classroom routines and procedures, take time to build all your foundational in-class norms and expectations by setting goals, co-creating classroom rules, and using interactive modeling to introduce procedures. Classes will need time to build their class community together and begin to forge new friendships. It is okay to continue teaching content in the next weeks while remembering to include the goal of building solid, consistent classroom routines that will sustain your class throughout the year. Also, dust off your reinforcing and reminding language for this re-entry as students will definitely need to hear what they are doing well and be reminded about what they need to be doing to succeed in the classroom.

Save the Date! Portal Project AISC Dialogue - What is Learning? - repeat announcement

This month the Portal Project is focussed on "What is Learning?" and we invite all parents, faculty and students to help us craft a definition of learning and identify conditions that support it. The session will take place on Thursday, October 28th from 4:30 - 5:15 pm. Portal Project dialogues are not only engaging but generate data that is shared with the Community Planning Team and Leadership Councils to help guide our Futures Planning process. As such, participants have a voice in helping to shape the AISC of tomorrow. Interested? Please click here to add the event directly to a google calendar or here for the direct meeting link.
