 Shout Outs!

We had a number of fantastic events in the past two weeks.

We want to thank Babs and Mary Kelly who were part of the Earth Week planning committee along with all of the teachers who hosted MS/HS student presenters and to the teachers who helped their students prepare for the live presentations.

Twenty-six faculty volunteered their time for the Maker Carnival last Friday. There was a wide range of fun and engaging activities for students to complete asynchronously or live on Zoom. I want to give a special shout out to Jen C. and Clinton for organizing the event and to Sherene, Gautami, and Murali for creating the Maker Carnival virtual space. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this event.

We also celebrated Litweek this week. We want to thank Babs and Teena for organizing this week-long event which included asynchronous events for students and live author visits. What a wonderful way to promote literacy at our school.

And lastly, we want to thank everyone in the ES for going above and beyond with supporting students, parents, and each other.

Virtual Learning Guidelines

Here are the guidelines for this semester’s report card.

Report Card Comments - Google Classroom

All homeroom teachers and specialists have been added to our Report Card Comments Google Classroom. Click here for the link to the report card assignment.

Then:

1). Click the add or create button.

2). Choose Google Drive and attach your report card comments document.

3). Then click turn in.

4). We will read and make any necessary comments on your document and return it back to you.

5). You will get an email after we return the document back to you.

New Students

The latest date for new student arrivals to receive a full report card is Friday, April 9th. If you have students who started after this date, please write a personal, social, emotional comment and a narrative comment for any subjects that you can. Many of you may be able to write about areas of success for reading, writing, and math. These comments do not have to be as long as the comments for the other students. You do not need to mark any of the standards.

Specialists do not need to fill out a report card for students starting after April 9th. Homeroom teachers please communicate the names of these students directly with specialist teachers.

Students Attending Another School

If you have students attending another school who may be completing some or none of the AISC virtual work, please complete what you can for the personal, social, emotional and subject area comments as well as check any appropriate standards. You can use the statement below for subject areas where you do not have enough information to write a comment.

There is insufficient data to assess XXXX’s growth at this time.

Location Update

As many families will begin traveling for the summer in the coming weeks, please keep Padma/Hazel updated with the location information.

Also, please be flexible if students will be in different time zones and may need to change a 1:1 time or ask to be in a different small group. We want students to feel included and be a part of the class community in the last few weeks. This is a difficult time, and we need to accommodate students the best we can.

REMINDER: Show the Class of 2021 Some Love!

You should have received an email from media@aischennai.org asking for your and your students’ help in celebrating the Class of 2021 with a special video message.

Your homeroom could get online at the same time and hold up signs or share verbal wishes of congratulations, good luck or any other message. This could be captured in an image or in a short video.

At-a-glance details:

  • Record your video in Zoom (Gallery View!) or take a screenshot.

    • Videos should be no longer than 15 seconds!

  • Click here, follow the instructions, and upload your media by Friday, May 14, 4:00 p.m. IST.

  • You can also upload multiple images.

  • If you have any questions, please contact media@aischennai.org.

Thank you for helping us make this virtual graduation walk special for our 2021 Raptors!

Increase Student Engagement by Connecting Students with Real People

By Steve Barkley

With equal parts affirmation and inspiration, Steve Barkley reminds us of several high impact elements to increase student engagement.

  • Students are connected, safe, and welcomed.

  • Students have choice, voice, and agency in their learning.

  • Students are able to connect what they are learning to real-world meaningful applications.

Check out Steve Barkley’s latest article to explore more ways to increase student engagement and learning. Feel free to reach out to any of the coaches to keep this conversation going!

From the Counselors

This quick exercise will help your students identify inner strengths and other qualities that make them special and powerful. By reflecting on our inner strengths and positive qualities, we can identify our “inner superhero” and call on them when we are going through challenges. In this activity, encourage students to come up with their own superhero. They can draw a picture that represents both what their superhero looks like but also what character traits their superhero has inside.

How did you know that somehow, you would get through this school year?

What were the skills that got you through?

What kept you going when you were tired or bored?

What did others notice you do during this year that meant something to them?

Have a safe weekend.

Regards,

Lynn, Dave, and Elliot

I have provided a basic example, but you can feel free to drop hints and make it as creative as possible. Please let Babs know if you have any questions and thank you for helping us to make LitWeek an engaging and fun celebration!

Those of you who know me (Hilary), know that Headspace (app) is one of my many obsessions. I love everything about Headspace: Youtube channel, Netflix series (multiple), Sleepcasts, kids section for all ages, Move, Focus Music, Focus Exercises, Mindful Earth, Soundscapes, all of it!

One of my favorite parts of Headspace is The Wake Up. “The Wake Up content is designed to help members start their day on a mindful note by prompting users to take healthier actions throughout the day, focusing on five key elements of living a mindful life: meditation, sleeping, moving, eating, and playing.” (headspace.com

And, those of you that know me, know that I’m always connecting my experiences to our students. Often, The Wake Up contains scientific research-based information on brain function that can be implemented into our instructional practice. Here is one such episode...

Can music improve your memory?

Have you ever thought of singing your read alouds to kids?

Take a journey with John Legend and Headspace Wake Up to see the effects.

Music on My Mind with John Legend and Headspace (9 minutes)

Going Further with parents and kids:

Headspace is here to help caregivers and kids show their minds some love. In Headspace Breathers, family mindfulness expert Samantha Snowden shares her favorite tips, games, and mindfulness techniques for helping kids and parents manage their emotions, find positivity, focus, and more.”

Balancing Your Child’s Emotions, Balancing Screen Time, Helping Kids Focus, Dealing with Separation from Loved Ones, for Young Kids, Separation from Loved Ones, for Big Kids (all about 5 minutes)

Suitcase of Skills - Here is an activity to help students finish strong during these final weeks of school. Use a picture of a suitcase and write down the skills and strategies they have used to be successful with virtual learning this year. Classmates can share strategies that have worked for them individually. Help students think about what others have done for them that has helped them be successful. They can add these things to their suitcase. They can decide which skills and support they want to keep with them at all times in their suitcase. They can draw a suitcase and write their skills on it and keep it near their desk.  You can refer to their suitcase with questions like...what’s in your suitcase that might help you with this activity or project?

Have a great weekend.
