Friday, March 27, 2020

Dear all,

You have made it to the end of the week! Since parents have been actively involved through SeeSaw this week, there is no need for a long or detailed end of week post; a simple close to the week will be sufficient.
Thank you for taking care of each other and supporting yourselves online with ideas, common assignments, chats, WhatsApp groups, Google hangouts, Zoom, and a plethora of ways you have found to connect, virtually.  It was great seeing so many of you drop by during our office hours - feel free to even drop in for ‘coffee!’ if you just want to say hi!
Remember that this is new for everyone; please be forgiving to one another and to us as we all work through this together. We are always open to feedback and suggestions for improvement - try as much as you can to funnel this through your team leader so we can make sure we are hearing it all in a streamlined way :)
One question you may ask yourself over the next couple of days when you will, hopefully, not be online is: am I posting too much or too little within the virtual learning environment and what kind of interactions and reflections have I built for my students? Keep pondering this as you are screen free this weekend so you can share ideas within your teams next week.
Our ES section office has also continued to function and has also been creating a different working environment. Please do remember to submit your attendance by 4:00 p.m each day to make Hazel and Padma’s life easier :) This needs to be submitted to Andrew shortly after, so please don’t be late with this!
Some of you have also had to accommodate your partners/spouses offices at home or wear the dual hat of home school parent also. Remember we are here, and again will have office hours this coming week too.

Knowing that we are all missing each other and needing more connection, we would like to invite you to an ES Happy Hour via Zoom next Friday at 5 p.m. Grab your favorite snack and drink and let's meet up and chat. Here is the link for the get together and we will also be sending out an invite next week.

Planning for Virtual Week 2:
Flexibility with schedules:
As you are aware from yesterday's email, we are moving towards offering more flexible learning schedules from next week. The complete weekly plan will be shared on Monday by 8:00 a.m, with a modified specialist schedule. All the children in a certain grade level will have their (e.g) music class on the same day.
Remember not every lesson needs to have a SeeSaw post; in fact think about alternatives as much as you can!
VERY IMPORTANT!!! For this week, if using SeeSaw, please schedule your activity to go out on the day it is needed instead of releasing them all on Monday.
  • Scheduling an activity
  • Approving posts; please try to only approve those posts made by yourself or your own students
  • Homeroom teachers - please avoid “bulk approve” posts of specialists.
  • Specialists - Please approve your own posts within 24 hours of your lesson, as much as possible, to support home room teachers in keeping tabs on posts.
** Please communicate with Priya if you need help with scheduling or approving posts!
Paying attention to social/emotional needs and connectivity
Homeroom classes will hold live morning meetings to facilitate both child-child and teacher-child face time, conversations and connections.
All teachers will be asked to include at least one video of themselves as part of their weekly lessons
What does that mean for homeroom teachers?
  • We will be keeping with the existing weekly template planner
  • The whole week lesson plans will be shared on Monday morning (by 8:00 a.m)
  • All SeeSaw posts ready on Monday and scheduled to go out the day they are needed
  • Each homeroom class will host a live morning meeting/morning message which will look slightly different by grade level
  • Subject lesson plans for the week should include at least one video of the teacher teaching/demonstrating/offering instructions or providing an overview
  • Attendance will still be completed by 4:00 p.m each day, using the same criteria
What does that mean for specialist teachers?
  • The whole week lesson plans will be shared on Monday morning (by 8:00 a.m)
  • Each specialist subject will be assigned one day per grade level for lessons and for classroom/office hours
  • All SeeSaw posts ready on Monday and scheduled to go out the day they are needed
  • Specialist lesson plans should include at least one video of the teacher teaching/demonstrating/offering instructions or providing an overview
  • Specialist teachers will only have 1 x classroom/office hours for students via live chat/hangouts per grade (assigned days in tables below)
  • Specialist teachers will have a second office hours block per grade for reviewing learning students have submitted, giving virtual feedback etc
For all of us, this means, although we will still be using the weekly planning template, should families start to engage with the learning on a different day in the week, we need to be flexible and allow this.

**Here's a short video from Priya on how to set up for zoom.

Wellbeing
At these times, it is even more crucial to pay attention to the well being of both ourselves and our families and those of our students. This great Wellbeing during CoI document compiled by Jack and Ryan is a fabulous place to start and encourage families to engage with. This  Wellbeing for teachers document, put together by counsellors, is aimed at our teacher audience.

Advice from Virtual Experts ‘If I had to do it all over again!’
Lots of really nice-to-read advice about Virtual Learning
General Philosophy`
  • Don’t expect that it will be perfect and accept that the amount of learning won’t be the same as usual.
  • Be willing to learn alongside the kids. This is a new situation for everyone.
  • Pace yourself.
  • Depending upon the age level that you’re teaching be realistic in your expectations.
  • Have patience! Just because it doesn't work the first doesn't mean it doesn't work
  • Expect the unexpected!
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help
  • Realize that things might take a bit longer with the learning curve
  • My mantra has been “ Be comfortable with being uncomfortable.”
  • Plan less. It’s all daunting for the kiddos and everything will take 3 x longer.
  • Borrow where necessary. There are some great videos that can help supplement the course material in any subject.
  • Allow for students and families to work at their own pace.
Have a good, great, spectacular, absolutely well deserved (and hopefully screen free!) weekend!

Friday, March 13, 2020

Dear all,

Thank you for your wonderful support, collaboration, patience and flexibility this last week of term as we prepare for continuity of instruction both for when we come back to school after spring break, and for if this moves to a virtual space.
Remember to continue to gather resources as you see them come in from our international colleagues and share them with your colleagues here. There are hundreds of resources being shared, and there is no point reinventing the wheel if great resources are out there!

As we all saw this week, we are currently operating within the guidelines that any non-essential events with a large gathering are currently being postponed. This week we had to postpone both the G3-5 Performing Arts Gala, the G5 sustainability rally, and the Staff appreciation parade. Lynn Scheider’s upcoming transition visit to AISC has also been postponed. We will confirm with you all when we have new dates for anything that has currently been postponed.

Thank You’s and Shout Outs…
  • Jen, Clinton, Geetha,  for helping out with the entry and exit procedures
  • Thank you to everyone who filled out their temp checks all week!
  • Priya V for working on templates for Continuity of Instruction
  • Sarah H, Jane, Anita, Julia, Shreya, Elliot, Vanessa, Becky, Salome and Alex for their flexibility in postponing events
  • Jack for efficiently managing subs, coordinating ASA changes and working so tirelessly to do so!

Taking Care of Ourselves During COVID-19
We would like to thank Nigel for sharing this incredible resource from SeaChange about how educators can take care of themselves during this outbreak. Please take the time to read this thoughtful and reassuring piece about self-care and self-awareness, and how we can all take care of each other at a challenging time. For example, you might recognize here common emotional reactions to a crisis, tips for routines to manage stress, and how to cope with social media overload.

Publishing Weekly Plan Link (and any other google links) with Parents
As you are all aware, we have created one weekly Continuity of Instruction plan per grade level if we need to use it. Homeroom teachers will publish the doc, then the link to this weekly plan will be shared by each homeroom teacher via Seesaw. All teachers are individually responsible for ensuring their lesson description or links are entered into the daily schedules.
Don’t know how to publish a doc? Watch this presentation to learn how to publish and get the link to share with parents to ensure access to any parent outside of AISC is enabled
Why publish instead of share?
  1. You can’t accidentally give edit access
  2. You can’t accidentally limit access
  3. Even parents who don’t use Google Docs will be able to link to the doc
  4. It is live, so all changes made will show up for parents

Friday, March 6, 2020

Dear all,

I write this from Luxembourg on a snowy Thursday where plans and preparation are underway at ISL, as at AISC, for a possible upcoming move to online instruction. Unfortunately, many schools in Europe have not had a lot of time to prepare for this as we have had, so continue to take each day at a time and balance your planning of continuity of instruction for what will continue at school and what might need to move to virtual.

The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone! Your colleagues, your coaches and your leadership team are here to help you.  You also need to remember that you come first. Be well and make sure all of your own needs are taken care of. Then, you will be in a better place of being well, being calm and being flexible and adaptable to whatever may come our way. It was hard being out this week, although it did give me a lot of time to reflect on how collaborative and connected we all are. Continue to reach out to one another, to Calley, Dave and myself, and to your other international colleagues who are facing similar planning challenges.

Share with Students Today: Temperature Screening
Next week, as you know, we will move to temperature screening protocols upon entry into campus. We will distribute the paper passes to your classrooms right after lunch/recess.

Below is the message that we would like you to share to students this afternoon, when you distribute the temperature check passes.

“As you know, some people have gotten sick because of the coronavirus. We are trying to be extra careful here at AISC so we need your parents to fill out this temperature pass before you and your family can enter the school. Before you leave for school each day, your parent will take your temperature and their own temperature if they are coming with you, and write the numbers down on the passes. You will bring the passes with you to school and hand them to the school staff at the gate before you can enter the school. If you do not have a pass, then your temperature will be taken before you can enter the school. If you ride the bus to school, you or your parent will hand the pass to the bus monitor; if you don’t have the pass, the bus monitor will take your temperature.”

You might choose to use one of these resources to share with your students to give more context.

From the EAL Department: EAL Strategy Talk, #4!
Another fortnight, another the EAL Strategy Talk! Our next Talk focuses on getting the most out of New Vocabulary found in Reading. AISC Sustainability Rally: Small People, Big Changes
As a part of their summative for their Social Studies unit Advocacy for Change, 5VL and 5BT are hosting an AISC Sustainability Rally: Small People, Big Changes Friday the 13th, 11-12:20 in the Unity Courtyard.

Their goal as advocates is to have the AISC community come together in solidarity around this issue and talk about solutions for challenges threatening our environment and ecosystems.

As AISC is an institution that champions sustainability, we know that it is a common thread between all students despite age or grade.

Grade 5 is asking that, if you and your students can make connections between their learning and the goal of the rally you:
  • Come support! Come share and learn ways you can contribute to a more sustainable future and school.
  • Take part! Have you and your class been learning about something connected to sustainability? Please come share!
