Friday, 29 September, 2017

Dear faculty,

Parents have already shared feedback on how impressed they were with the preparation of the conferences held this week. Thank you all for the effort and care you took in setting up for these.

Thank you’s
  • Jack, Amy, Becky, Lily, Deepa, Keeley, Bindu, Vanessa, Sam, Jyotsna, Sobha, Megha, Tiffany, Kristina who contributed names of students demonstrating traits from our AISC vision of a learner.
  • Alex and Rachael for sorting and distributing hundreds and hundreds of books that were pulled out of storage.
  • Those who covered duties through the week.
  • Mona for being such a huge help in my transition into the classroom. I am so impressed by her level of responsibility, professionalism, and reliability. (from Vanessa).
  • Adithya, Uma, Za, Evelyn, Hilary and Leontheen for providing such able help and support covering for teachers who were working with Erma this week.
  • Carl, Rachael and Alex for presenting at the newbie lunch today.
  • Newbies for attending a newbie lunch this week.

Some confusion over our start time; to be clear; our work day begins at 8am. We appreciate those who are ready and present in and around their classrooms/offices by this time as it helps us with arranging substitute cover and passing on important information to begin the school day.

However, we understand that meetings are taking place before school, or some of you are collaborating in other spaces at this time, and may not get into your actual classroom until closer to 8:15am. Please know our above appreciation is a preference, not a rule; it is appreciated because it makes our lives a lot easier and the day run smoother for all!

Mehendi Cones
These will be sent to your classes on Tuesday. Please choose a convenient time for this activity during the course of October (preferably on their performance week). TAs can help with this and older students can choose to do this for each other. This is an optional activity.

What is Mehendi?
Leaves of the henna plant made into paste and filled in a cone. This is a temporary tattoo that will last about a week. We use this for decorating palms and feet on special occasions.

Next Wednesday Faculty Meeting
We will be working again in ES Curriculum Area Teams - look for information from your CAL.

Virtual Learning Day training preparation
Dear Colleagues, please take a moment to complete this survey about skills needed to do a  VLD. Your response will provide us with important feedback that will help us organise trainings to improve our Continuity of Instruction Plan.

Goal Setting Conferences
Happening next Monday 25th - 3:30 - 5pm and Tuesday 26th all day. Homeroom and EAL teachers will be involved in many conferences during the day; specialist teachers please be present and around on Tuesday in case a parent comes by for a drop in conference. Otherwise, you can spend the time working on any needed documentation. This is a good day to find a time with a learning coach!

Supervision in the regular spots will be covered by TAs.
Monday - Sandwiches available at the ES Office (packed) & ES Lounge (Counter) from 3:15 pm.
Tuesday - Lunch in the ES Cafeteria - Indian and Continental Options.

Teacher illness
We are now making this message as black and white and clear as possible:

If you are sick; stay home.
  • If you have had a contagious illness, you need to have full clearance from a doctor before you return to school.
  • If you are absent in the morning because of illness, please do not come in for the afternoon.

It is actually more challenging for us to cover for half the day and help you make it through the afternoon when you really are not feeling up to it. We do not want to mother you!

India month - important information for rehearsal times!
There is general information about India Month in this document including practice schedules for each grade level.

Unified Classroom Skills Tracker
Sherriden sent a google sheet on Wednesday regarding Self assessment of technology related skills needed for continuity of instruction. Please ensure your own information is entered and complete by Monday 25th.
If there are areas you identify as needing support, IT will be reaching out to you directly to offer training and support from next Wednesday 27th.

New Basketball Hoops
Two new hoops and 5 basketballs are now set up and ready for student use. Although they’re located in the back corner of the EY playground (OLC), they were designed to be used by older students as well. Anyone can play here during regular recess times. If you’re on playground duty, please wander through the space and keep an eye on that area.

Duty Schedule Swaps
If you have made a swap from the original duty schedule, please confirm that it is reflected in this document. We had a couple of incidents this week where people missed their duties and/or coverage was arranged based on an incorrect schedule.

Meet AISC - Ross Connelly - Grade 4 Teacher
Ross-Connelly-1.jpg
Ross loves engaging students in big conversations and asking them deep questions. He can speak French and wishes he knew more languages. When Ross is not teaching , he likes to jog and has recently started making homemade ice cream. Before teaching he served in West Africa with the Peace Corps, where he slept many nights in a mud hut. Ross has taught students from grade 1 through grade 12 and Elementary is his favorite!. He has been really proud to work among a lot of inspiring teachers at AISC and other schools and has learned a lot from them. Their examples have pushed him to be a better educator. Sometimes people tell him he looks like James Hetfield from Metallica after he cut his hair off. Ross says “It would be pretty fun to be him for a day when he's playing a sold-out stadium show!”

5 Tips for Managing a 1:1 Technology Environment
By Hilary Barron
September 14, 2017

1. Provide Clear Instructions
As many of you already know, our students don’t enter the classroom knowing how to do everything “technology”. One ways to help students is to provide a clear set of instructions that provide review, modeling, and are easily accessible to students throughout the year. Something I learned at Learning2.0 conference is using app flows. I have posted an example below. This gives students color coded visual icons to help them step-by-step. If it is a longer set of instructions, you may want to create a screencast and post it to Edmodo. You may also want to pin the post so that it remains at the top of your group for all students to see. Alternatively, students can save the post to their backpack so they can go back to it at anytime.

2.  Recruit Student Tech Gurus
Students feel more comfortable asking each other for help than their teachers. They might also be more tech savvy than some of us. Find 2 students who are hard working, helpful, and patient. When you know you will be using a new tool, invite them to have lunch with you and train them. You could even let them create a cool name for themselves, “Savvy Cyborgs”. They can probably do better.

3. Stay Close
Proximity...do you all remember learning this in our teacher program? Staying close to your students is an easy way to manage behavior both on and off line. “One particular technique that has proven simple and effective is the use of proximity control – the idea that simply being physically near students improves their behavior and focus” (Jordan Catapano, TeachHub.com). Another way to make it easier to view students screens is to use pair seating.

4. Cultivate Curiosity
Try to use tools that enhance the learning experience. Technology offers us so many opportunities to engage our students. There is so much available it can be overwhelming researching all that is out there. If you aren’t sure of what tool to use, see a coach for suggestions. Remember when planning technology integration, start with the learning goal. Practice, Practice, Practice. Use the tool several times yourself before introducing it to students to work out all the kinks.

5. Demonstrate Digital Citizenship
This has been a huge topic of discussion this year. As students are becoming more and more active on social media and the Internet, it becomes increasingly important not just to teach digital citizenship but to model and allow students to practice. Will they make mistakes? Yes, and we hope that they make them here in our community. We want them to learn from their mistakes in our protected environment first so when they go out on their own they are equipped with the tools and critical eye they need to stay safe, responsible, and respectful.

High School Discovery Day -Friday, October 6th.
Discovery Day is an opportunity for HS students to learn something outside of the normal class schedule and structure. One option in the past involved high school students working with elementary school. This is a great opportunity for high school students to gain experience in a classroom setting and to learn skills that encourage empathy, confidence and compassion. For elementary students, it provides a fun opportunity to interact with older students, and for teachers, it could be a great opportunity to try something new!  Please complete this Google Form to indicate your interest in participating.  Please contact Josiah Laposky a ljosiah@aischennai.org if you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration!

ES Discovery Studios needs your help!
We are running low on some items and were hoping that you could recycle them by bringing them into the Discovery Studios. We are in need of the following items:

  • plastic containers - any size or shape and washed
  • plastic lids from all kinds of containers
  • scrap fabric from old clothes or material if you sew
  • broken down small appliances
  • old tools that are no longer wanted

Items can be dropped off in 2602/2603 - Thank you!

Adaptive Schools
As you know, we are hosting the Adaptive Schools foundation seminar in November. This is a 4 day course from 20 - 23 November. If you are interested in attending this training, please let me know by Friday 29 September.

Happy weekend everyone!

Warmly,

Keryn & Lori

Friday, September 15, 2017

Dear all,

As the weather remains hot, remember the importance of self care. Stay hydrated, and remind your students to drink water often too!

Thank yous (have someone to thank - let Lori or Keryn know!)
  • All TAs who have provided cover this week for Karen and Alex who were away
  • To 4th grade for hosting a fabulous learning celebration this morning, and in particular the students of 4MG, 4RC, 4JN, 4JH, 3TF, 3SS and 3JM (along with Sarah, Finny, Barbara, Ron and Jack) for presenting.

Personnel Change
As you know Vanessa Lopez has taken on the homeroom position to replace Marianne Brooks, who left on Thursday. We are advertising for a new co-teacher. Until we can recruit a suitable replacement, Karen has kindly agreed to work full time as an EAL teacher, continuing her world language English lessons as well as offering 60% of her weekly time to the Grade 5 triad of 5BT and 5JD.

News for you from 3612
As we start to settle into managing our work flow for the year, this might be a good time to revisit the personality preferences for those we work closely with. Take a look at AISC ES Preference Types Grid to find those people you collaborate with. At the bottom, we've linked some websites to read up on each type and understand them more deeply.

Readers and Writers Workshop PD
In lieu of having a literacy consultant at AISC this year, a variety of homegrown professional development sessions are being planned and will be scheduled to support your needs, passions and literacy goals.  Some sessions will be by invitation, and some by sign up/interest. Look soon for an invitation or sign up opportunity coming your way!

Indian Month Teachers Dance
Not too late to add your name to this sign up and join in the teachers dance fun!

Click here for information about upcoming India Month events.

MAP Make ups
We’ve had some internet connectivity challenges so we had to suspend testing for the week. The result of that is that the make up schedule will not be available until early next week. The testing location, times and list of students will be sent directly to impacted teachers by Tuesday.

Spirit Week
Next week is Spirit week! This will be a combined school event for all AISC students in Elementary, Middle and High School.

Monday 18: Pyjama day
Tuesday 19: Formal day
Wednesday 20: Multiple day
Thursday 21: One-color day
Friday 22: UN day (national dress)

UN Day Parade
Information about roles/duties has been sent from Todd via an email from Angeline. Please make sure you understand your assignment for the event.

Friday, September 08, 2017

Dear all,

Happy Weekend - looking forward to seeing all the newbie/twobies at our function on Saturday! Everyone else enjoy relaxing, recharging and re-energising!

I will be out of school next week from Wednesday, visiting ISB, and also attending Cognitive Coaching in Bangkok. Lori will be here for anything you may need.

A big thank you to everyone - teachers and teacher assistants - who are here before 8am every morning! We appreciate everyone being available in case we need to sort substitutes or alternate cover. If for some reason you can not be in and around your class by 8am, please make sure you let us know!

Change of Personnel
As a result of unforeseen circumstances, Marianne has been unable to have her work visa renewed. Next Thursday 14 September will be her last day with students at AISC. Vanessa will be taking over Marianne’s role as homeroom teacher and will be working together with Marianne next week to ensure a smooth transition.

Thank yous (have someone to thank - let Lori or Keryn know!)
  • Deepa and the Grade 2 team for hosting a fabulous assembly
  • Jack, Sobha, the Grade 1 & 2 teams for presenting great celebrations of learning
  • Cheyenne for jumping in to cover for Fer/Samantha this week in Grade 2
  • Curriculum Area Leads (CALs) for preparing for our upcoming ES meeting time
  • Many thanks to Vanessa and Salome for creating a modified pre-assessment for Reader's Workshop that allowed Grade 5  to obtain an amazing amount of information despite student's low levels of English

Emergency Drill
We have an emergency drill next Thursday 14th at 1:45pm. New teachers, please check with colleagues about where your grade lines up on the field.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILL GUIDELINES:
  1. Once we have an indication/alarm of an emergency situation, all students and staff should maintain silence at all times to ensure that directions can he heard.  The indicator is a wailing alarm.
  2. Once at the soccer field area, all classes/groups should form in straight lines under the respective Grade Signage and maintain the lines until further instruction.
  3. The responsible teacher should be at the front of the class/group so that they are accessible to principals.
  4. Groups should not sit unless instructed to do so.
  5. Silence should be maintained until the drill is over and students are released.
  6. Do not use elevators.
All Teachers: Please carry the emergency booklet and class roster with you when you leave the classroom.  The RED and GREEN sign are inbuilt in the booklet.

#aiscelementary Twitter Challenge is here!
Twitter thoughts from tweetaholic….
“Lately, I've been an avid user of Twitter for professional development. Approximately every 5 seconds I get 2 or more tweets with some type of inspiration or PD!
This week alone has inspired an article on reading levels, #Booksnaps that we will implement in the CIC, @Flipgrid, and a quiz from @KQEDedspace on how good you are at detecting bias.

After seeing the power behind Twitter and mentioning it to all my colleagues I started to wonder how we could use it at #AISC to inspire more learning. Coaches were talking about it in the coaching room when who happened to pop in...our one and only principal, Keryn, also a very active user of Twitter. Next thing we were sucked into a "twitter hole" emerging only to discuss how to increase our Twitter traffic. We need to have a Twitter CHALLENGE! Now because Keryn has the personality trait of being an ‘activator’ an idea has become a reality - only 2 hours later she was emailing us with the LET'S DO IT! And, of course, I jumped right in.

So...here we go! Post anything that will increase capacity for growth.

  • Add a picture with a short text, post it to Twitter, and use the hashtag #aiscelementary.
  • Post a link to an article you found interesting with a reflection or question and use the hashtag #aiscelementary.
  • Participate in a twitter chat and use the hashtag #aiscelementary.
  • Share a list of experts to follow and use the hashtag #aiscelementary.
  • Share a resource and use the hashtag #aiscelementary.

This twitter challenge on!  Great prizes to be won for the most posts using #aiscelementary hashtag and other random prizes - the more you post, the more chances you have! The twitter challenge will run from now through until the October break.  Happy tweeting everyone!

From the fabulous ‘2 writing teachers’ blog….
Ideas for Differentiating in TCRWP
  1. Keep lessons short– One of the defining features of writing workshop is the belief that sustained writing time makes a huge difference.  And yet, sometimes in our drive to teach kids more stuff about writing, we eat into their writing time by talking more, thereby extending our minilessons or inquiries.  Kate encourages us to be aware of over-talking.  Don’t try to pack it ‘all’ into the minilesson- that’s not differentiation!  And besides, after about ten minutes many or most of the kids are not listening anyway.  In our recent #TWTBlog chat, author Ralph Fletcher said, “If we talk too much, we deflate the natural urge to write.”  It may come as a surprise, but in concurring with Kate, I recommend lowering our expectations about the work of the day.  It just isn’t going to move the majority of our writers. By keeping our whole-class instruction short, we allow more time for conferring and small group work, which is where we can better differentiate our instruction.
