On Campus Preparation Days

Please read this carefully:

If you are eligible to attend the on campus preparation day (either Feb 3rd or 5th) please arrive with plenty of time to complete the health clearance and be in the Rec Gym by 9:00 a.m for an orientation that will last about 30 minutes. Here is a synopsis of the day.

All homeroom classes will have asynchronous work for students - no morning meeting, small groups, or 1:1s. Specialists will continue to teach their class as usual. Specialists, please come for room preparation on the day that you do not teach. If you are a coach or counselor, you may pick which day to come to campus. EAL teachers and TAs, please come with your grade level.

In preparation, please ensure you:

  • Complete the attestation on the parent locker application (instructions shared previously by Greg Clinton via email)

  • Bring all food or snacks you may need for the day. Refrigerators and microwaves are not operational.

  • Bring a water bottle labelled with your name. Water dispensers are operational.

  • Wear a mask and bring a spare in a resealable bag.

  • Bring an individual hand sanitizer. While hand sanitizer is readily available throughout campus, you may find it convenient to have one of your own.

  • Bring your laptop. You will need to access a “To Do” list for the day.

  • Bring your old ID card, new cards are ready for pick up

Please note that coffee/tea is available in the Madras Cafe. You will be provided with a cup for temporary use and must return the used cup to the cafe in their designated place. You may not leave the cup in your classroom nor in the sink in the ES office as it must be sterilized properly by the cafe. Should you wish to use your own cup, you must take responsibility for washing the cup after use and returning it to your classroom or home.

The orientation will include:

  • A welcome from Andrew

  • A quick review of Raptor Safe takeaways from Ryan

  • Goals for the day from Lynn

Please mention the asynchronous day to your students and families. A note went to parents in the blog (see below) but a reminder from you is helpful. Please make it clear that specialists will be holding class as usual on these two days. Also, please don’t forget to reschedule any of your 1:1 meetings.

This was the message in the parent blog this week:

Asynchronous Student Days - Classroom Preparation Days for Teachers

Teachers will be working on campus on February 3rd and 5th to organize their classroom and pack up student work from last year. Teachers in EY-Grade 2 will be on campus on Wednesday, February 3rd and teachers in Grades 3-5 will be on campus on February 5th. When the grade level teachers are on campus, those grades will have asynchronous work only. There will be no morning meeting, small groups, or 1:1s (1:1s will be rescheduled).

Please note: Specialist teachers WILL hold live classes on these two days. Your child(ren) can join their specialist teacher on these days as usual.

Coaches Corner

During the February 10th faculty time, we will offer a range of workshops for you to choose from. Before finalizing the options, we would like to know what is of most interest to you. Please indicate your preferences by completing this short survey. Thank you!

Position Available

The Associate Athletics and Activities Director position will be open next year. This is a part-time role, where staff continue in a Faculty contract but have release time from teaching classes to fulfill the responsibilities. The primary role for this position is oversight of the ASA (Arts, Sports, & Activities) programs. Email Ryan McFarland (mryan@aischennai.org) for more details and the full job description by 5 PM on Monday, February 8th for consideration.

Save the Date - Vision Day Grades 3-5

We will have our second Vision Day for students in grades 3-5 on Wednesday, March 10th. Start thinking about if you’d like to run the same project or a different one. You will have time to work on your project on March 3rd. More information will come as we get closer to the date.

Student Survey starting January 27th (grades 3-5)

This was the note that went to parents in the blog this week:

On Wednesday, we will email all students in grades 3-5 a survey to complete by Friday, January 29th. The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback to help your child’s homeroom teacher become more effective in the classroom. Your child will reflect on their current homeroom class. Honest, thoughtful, and careful feedback on all questions is important to us.

PGE Goals

This is just a reminder as we hit the mid year mark to collect evidence to show the work you’re doing on meeting your professional goal(s).

ES/MS Library Usage - Repeat Announcement

Starting January 18th, faculty and staff are invited to request materials from the ES/MS Library via Google forms. The library will remain closed, so please use this online form to request materials and library staff will prioritize gathering materials for delivery. All books that are returned have gone through the UV Filtration machine for sterilization. Please let Babs know if you have any questions.

Coaches Corner

Have you ever wished you could give feedback right on a piece of work in Seesaw? Here’s a hot tip about targeting feedback directly on the student work space in Seesaw. It’s possible to write your feedback right on the page. You can even record a message across multiple pages of a post. BAM!

Do you have 2 mins? Watch a very quick how to video

(Special shout out to an anonymous male, third-grade teacher for providing this tip. Feel free to reach out to him for more cool Seesaw tricks!)

From the Counselors

PEEC (Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum) offers Brain breaks for Zoom.  Here is one of them you can try with your class:

“What do you look like when?”

Place your class in “gallery view” and ask students to sit with the side of their face facing the screen. Ask students to express their reactions physically using the phrase: “What do you look like when…. E.g. “What do you look like when you finish your Seesaw activities?"

After 2 seconds of silence, as a moment of facial preparation, each student faces the screen with their best facial expression depicting their reaction to the scenario described.

This might be good for humor, building community, and moving around a bit.

Have a great weekend!

Jennifer Serravallo continues to know exactly how best to support teachers! Her recent blog post on Engagement in the Online Classroom and book titled, Connecting with Students Online, offers us simple and practical strategies to support our students in the digital world. The blog post offers several instructional graphics and the ability to read one chapter from Serravallo’s new book. It is worth checking out!

From the Counselors

A Mental Vacation Exercise

You are all doing your best to provide AISC students with the best support ever. We want to give you support too, because we know that when you are feeling well, your students feel well. We came across this “vacation” idea from Solution Focused Schools

Given the additional events recently, we wanted to reach out and give you a chance to take a “mental vacation.”

Please read the question below and think of some responses. Have fun! You don’t have to be realistic! Just dream.

Just suppose, sometime today, a miracle happens and the events of our world are not as troublesome to you. It is almost as if you get to step out of the current story and move toward a better story. What would that story look like?  What would you be doing at school as an educator in that story, just for today? How would it help you to do that? What would your students notice? How would it help them?

If you like, you can post your answers anonymously here on jamboard. We will compile them and post them someplace for all of us to see. We will keep it anonymous! We can’t wait to see your answers.

Jan Jamboree

Please advertise this to your students.

Are you looking to have some fun on a Saturday? Well, we have just the thing for you! On January 30th, AISC will be hosting our annual Jan Jamboree. From arts & crafts to trivia, we have prepared a ton of fun activities for you to play with your friends! Sign-ups will open next Monday, January 17th.

Come join us!

Have a terrific weekend!
