2021/22 Strand Feedback

Many thanks to everyone who submitted the feedback form to help us evaluate our strands from 2021/22! We had more responses at the end of this year than we did at the midpoint. Thank you!

The feedback on format and facilitation will be shared with the strand leaders and consultants along with your comments. Below please find the overall feedback on the content of the strands.

The Office of Teaching and Learning in partnership with the principals are busy at work lining up strands for next year. We hope to share a firm plan with you at the OTL wrap up meeting in May!

From the Counselors

Growth mindset helps to foster confidence that anything can be learned with the right amount of effort. With a growth mindset students worry less about being right and put more energy into learning and growing. Growth mindset can also help students stay open to friendship changes, avoid assumptions and generalizations about others, and have the confidence in knowing mistakes are made in friendships and we can practice and grow social skills. Each new friendship dynamic provides an opportunity to practice social skills and learn to manage emotions in healthy ways. Growth mindset keeps the focus on practicing these skills and allowing for mistakes in the process. Students stay open to growth in themselves and others.

Here are some words to encourage growth mindset with social skills:

  • You can work this out.

  • You are thinking the problem through.

  • You shared the difficulties you are having and accepted advice.

  • You are looking at the problem from different perspectives to find a solution.

  • You are practicing friendship skills and improving.

  • Friendship skills take time and effort.

  • Mistakes in friendships help us learn how to be a better friend.

  • Remind the student of their ability to build understanding. Ask them to engage in a perspective taking exercise. Ask them how they might feel if someone did this to them. Ask them to reserve judgment until they make an effort to look at the situation from the other perspective.

  • Your effort in learning to…… was apparent in your group work today.
