Thursday, February 21, 2019

Dear Faculty,

Greetings on this Super Thursday! We hope you will all enjoy the rest and rejuvenation of a three-day weekend after a big week of field trips and author visits in the elementary school.

In the next few weeks, we will be ramping up to Student Led Conferences and continue progress on our goal of using data to tell our students’ growth stories. Please take a careful look at the timeline and expectations for SLCs, since a good bit of parent communication and coordination will be required for smooth conferences.

Thank yous
  • Ms. Anita would like to thank Clinton, Valar and our AISC Intern, Shri, for helping prepare student artwork for the Upper ES Art Exhibit.
  • Thank you to Jen Cypra for your hard work on developing the Grades 2 - 5 Math STEM projects.
  • Mr. Ross says, “Thank you to the grade four teachers for being committed to our students over the past couple of busy weeks. Your flexibility and collaboration as a team are appreciated!”
  • Thank you all of the G3 - G5 TAs for helping students complete the student-teacher feedback survey during specials! Thank you also to all teachers for supporting this opportunity for students to give feedback!
  • Thank you from Calley to Megha, Angie & Barb, Marea, Vanessa and Bindu for inviting me to do some targeted math instructional coaching. Vision Inspiration Projects Launch
If you are not a specialist teacher, you might be wondering about Vision Projects. What are they? Who will be involved? Read more to find out and come to our breakfast next Monday morning; 8:10 a.m in the Design Studio. This is on the calendar for all Grade 3, 4 and 5 faculty, however, others are welcome too!

Overview
Directed by our strategic pathway around ‘learning and innovation in the system where “AISC implements innovative learning experiences incorporating the inquiry framework and transdisciplinary skills, and alternative schedules to engage the vision of the AISC learner,” we have designed vision projects to be implemented for Grades 3-5 next academic year.

AIMS
  • To engage AISC students in the development of the attributes from the Vision for an AISC Learner through a transdisciplinary, multi-age, immersive learning opportunity
 RATIONALE
  • Aligned with our AISC mission, these projects offer opportunities for students to apply academic skills along with communication, self-management, social, thinking and research skills, through alternate schedules outside of the four walls of the classroom.
  • The aims of the Vision Projects are aligned to each of our AISC beliefs.
How?
Vision Project leaders have been identified and project outlines have been developed through a project based learning approach. The nature of the projects differ; some projects focus on one curricular area and others are transdisciplinary with elements of many different areas incorporated into the project.

Who?
All students and teachers from Grades 3-5 will participate.  All faculty from these grades will be part of a project team.

When?
Next November, the traditional MCT week will become Project Week. This will include MCT as one project option that children can choose from.  This year we will have work sessions during faculty meeting time for Grade 3-5 teachers to work on project outlines.

What?
We have a menu of
project options outlined here. These will be further explained during our breakfast, and also our upcoming work sessions, with all G3-5 teachers contributing in some capacity.

Vision Inspiration Projects Launch meeting for all teachers of 3-5 students
Monday 25 February at 8:10 a.m in the Design lab. Join us for coffee and breakfast and learn about our Vision Projects. All teachers who teach Grade 3-5 should be present, and if other teachers would like to learn you are welcome to join too!

Wild and Wacky Science (from Hilary)
Fingernail Sun Sensors, An animal that can regenerate parts of its heart, Want to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes?, Wild Vacation Spots, Sand Sculptors and their 40-foot creations.

If any of these topics interest you or might interest your students, let me know. Scholastic's Science magazines have arrived in India. I have a few copies in the coaching room. All articles are NGSS aligned and utilize the practices and cross-cutting concepts in our standards. They are also aligned to common core standards. It is an engaging way to introduce current science topics and develop reading and research skills.

Student - Teacher Feedback (repeat)
During the week of 18-21 February Grade 3-5 students will be completing their student teacher feedback survey. This survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Homeroom and EAL teachers will work together in triads to cover each other so these surveys can be completed without the teacher receiving feedback in the room. Students should carry their device to specialist lessons that week. (Once surveys are done, no devices are needed to go to these classes).

TAs please plan to spend the first 5-10 minutes in one Art, Music, PE, and IS lesson for each of your two classes.

WL feedback will only be given from Grade 4 & 5 students who spend all year with one WL teacher. This will happen on Monday, and also only be in Spanish and French; a teacher assistant will be present for the first 5-10 minutes of these classes on Monday.

Links will be emailed directly to each student on Monday morning the 18th.

Report Card Timeline for upcoming Progress Reports (repeat)
It is time to start thinking about the upcoming progress report cards that will go home with the students after their Student Led Conference. These are the one-page report cards that assess progress within the learning habits, and also the one PSE paragraph narrative.

Proofreading is going to be a big focus going forward with report cards. We feel it is important to clearly clarify the role and expectations of your colleague proof readers. We are hoping that many undetected errors will be avoided this way.

Monday 11 - Wednesday 27 February
  • Begin writing PSE narrative progress report comments. Please ensure to familiarise yourself with the style guide and proofreading process
Wednesday 27 February
  • Faculty meeting dedicated to student led conferences
  • Focus on SLC will be ‘preparing students to show and tell their own growth story’
  • Progress report cards due to colleague proof reader by 5pm

Reminder and Clarity on Alarms
Thank you to everyone for your patience and collaboration on Wednesday’s unexpected drill. ES teachers were very professional and calm and we appreciated that in a challenging situation. Going forward, we need to emphasize that if an alarm ever sounds, even for a moment, we will follow drill procedures and evacuate. Should you not hear the alarm, but another faculty member alerts you, please join in and help out without question. Thank you for your understanding.

Field Closed for Morning Recess on Monday, February 11th
Due to a number of students leaving trash on the field, we have decided to close the field on Monday for morning recess. Students playing soccer were previously informed about keeping the field clean, but, unfortunately, have not done that. Please talk with your students about not eating their snacks on the field and about the importance of picking up after themselves when they are outside. This will not only help keep the soccer field clean, but all areas of our elementary section.

Learning Celebrations - Seating on Time
Building on the success of our recent on-time start for ES faculty meetings, here’s a reminder to teachers to get students seated for Learning Celebrations by 2:43 PM in the FAC. Please consider your walk time and transition time so that we can start and end our Learning Celebrations on schedule.
Specialists, if you have a class that ends right before a celebration, please take the students over to the FAC directly from your special to avoid transition delays, unless you’ve made another arrangement with the homeroom teacher. Any questions? Please ask.

From Roots and Shoots Club
Leontheen and Barbara shared that the Roots and Shoots club had a very successful Marine Biologist Field trip last Saturday at the Tree Foundation. The 9 students that attended had a fantastic time and really learned a lot of information!  Here’s an excerpt from the letter that they shared with the Tree Foundation after their visit.  Lots of authentic student learning happening here!
“We also learned how you help rescue turtles and if possible you try to get them back to the sea. We learned if a sea turtle has at least 3 flippers, it can often return back to the sea. But it takes a lot of hard work to make sure that the turtle can survive back in the sea. It was interesting to see both freshwater and sea turtles. We support your idea to make a turtle pond at the elephant sanctuary. Those turtles would love that new habitat.

Happening on Campus:  Feb Fling
Faculty parents, don’t miss out on a fun, on campus activity next Saturday, February 16th.  Feb Fling is a ton of fun sponsored by the high school service clubs.  We hope you’ll come check it out and have a blast!

Hey Attentive Readers! Win a Coffee!
Thanks all for reading. Today’s mystery question is, “What’s the first step for every level of report card writing and proofreading?” First two people to respond here win a complimentary beverage from the iHub. And congratulations to Vanessa L, Mona, and Scott, who were the first three respondents, of many, who knew that Waitangi Day is New Zealand National Day, celebrated by our own Kiwis, Keryn and Tara.

Have a great weekend everyone!
