Saturday, January 28, 2017

Happy Saturday! Such great appreciative feedback has come our way from Monday’s controlled release after the roads being blocked. Thank you again all for following extraordinary instructions and protocols; this certainly allowed our children to feel safe and well cared for. Thank you to those who have shared ideas for how to further streamline the systems and structures we had in place - please keep these coming, they are well appreciated!

More “thanks” to
  • Jonathan, Rosario, Sohba, James and Nushrath for all of their hard work on the preK-KG and grades 1-2 Field Day activities!
  • All of the teachers and TAs who ran stations and encouraged participation and good sportsmanship on the field days.
  • Gareth and the Middle Schoolers for welcoming our grades 3-5 students to a MS assembly where we saw a preview of the Hunchback.

Message from Correne Larsen
Please let us know if you would like some high school volunteers to work with students on Friday, February 17th for our Semester 2 Discovery Day experience.  All teachers are welcome to request volunteers in your classrooms, whether it is 3+, 5th grade, PE, Music or anywhere in between. Thanks so much for accommodating this type of experience for our high school students. I'll be in touch with those interested in the coming weeks to plan out the details. With questions, please email me at lcorrene@aischennai.org. Thank you!

The Hunchback of notre dame Play banner-01.jpg
Middle School Theatre students proudly bring you a new, exciting and spectacular adaptation of the novel by Victor Hugo.

The young man Quasimodo has been locked up in the cathedral of Notre Dame for twenty years.  When he sneaks out to look at the Festival of Fools, he is suddenly thrust into a world which he does not understand. And so begins this tale of love, courage, and comprehending the value of true inner strength.

With stunning costumes, music, lighting and a breathtaking set, this original production promises to bring to life this classic tale.

Tickets are on sale before school in the Middle and High School Entrance, and after school at Elementary School. Tickets are Rs 200.  Performances are on the 2nd and 3rd of February, at 5pm.  Tickets go on sale next week.  We have a hunch you’ll love it!

Report Cards - Repeat Announcement; Report timeline and information
Style guide for writing narrative comments can be found here

For students who left AISC during the second trimester, please write a report card comment indicating that they have moved. It is fine to leave the indicators blank but receiving schools often look for confirmation of attendance. Also, if you have a new student who has recently joined, mark “N/A” and write a brief comment welcoming them to AISC and commenting on their transition to date.

Consultant News: Additional Assessment Learning Opportunities
Standards-based assessment guru Tom Schimmer will be joining us from February 6 to 10 for a week of school-wide assessment learning opportunities.  You can find his calendar here; click the + button on the bottom righthand side to add it.

Tom will engage with each MS team, many subject areas, and some other small groups.  He will also lead the all-faculty professional learning early release on February.  In addition to these group sessions, we have three opportunities for all teachers, K-12, to participate in additional sessions.

* Tuesday/Thursday afternoon session:  Constructing an Assessment Plan
Join one of these two sessions to learn how to develop an assessment plan for a future unit.  This session will include some learning activities around the Big Ideas in unit assessment planning and unpacking a unit progression.  Then, teachers will engage in supported work time with Tom.  This is a great opportunity to bring forward a unit plan set in the future and develop it ahead of time.
Teachers should bring: documents, assessments, topics, or standards from a unit that is in need of revision.  Teams or co-teachers are invited to attend together or separately.

Note that the same topic is covered both Tuesday and Thursday.

* Drop-in time:  Individual needs
After attending Tom's Wednesday session, do you have any questions to follow up on, for your own personal situation?  Do you have a nagging question or issue about standards-based assessment or reporting?  Would you like someone to provide more strategies about formative assessment, feedback, and sound assessment practices?  We are happy to provide drop-in time with Tom at the following times.  These times will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please meet Tom in the SHED. Sign up sheet will be available on February 6 for drop-in visits.
