Live Specialist Classes - Change to Schedule

Starting Monday, March 29th, specialists will be offering an additional live class at 11:00 a.m. There are now three specialist class options for students to attend - 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. All of the classes will be the same content. We are hoping this will help even out the number of students attending each session. Please add this to your weekly slide deck and let children know during your morning meetings next week.

Save the Date

We will have an ES virtual social on April 9th. More information to come.

LitWeek 2021

The AISC Libraries are gleefully putting together our first annual, all-school LitWeek to be held April 26th-30th, in celebration of all things booky! One event that we are excited to trot out is our version of The Masked Singer - The Masked Reader! In case you aren't familiar with this Korean show, here is a little teaser. Can you guess who the singer is?

We'd love for each homeroom to sign up to host a masked reader. The reader will share a story and perhaps share a few hints about their identity before the kids can make guesses and the reader can unveil themselves. You can sign up with three possible times and a date here.

I hope this will be as much fun as it sounds! Please let Babs know if you have any questions.

TCRWP Summer Institutes

The TCRWP Summer Institutes will be virtual this year. If you are interested in attending one of the virtual PD weeks for either reading or writing, please fill out the PD form on the Raptor Way Blog. Teachers can use their PD funding for next year to attend a summer institute. Let Lynn know if you have questions or need help with the application.

From the Office of Teaching and Learning

A clarification to the March 12th email sent regarding Faculty Camp in the fall... experiences will be offered in-person, virtually or in hybrid mode depending upon quarantine restrictions in July. In other words, while you will need to be in Chennai to attend faculty camp, you need NOT be out of quarantine. We will accommodate people however we can.

As a reminder, the following camps are on offer:

  • Curriculum Camp (July 23 and 26) - Unit planning for Physical Education, World Language and Performing Arts (participants compensated for their time)

  • PD Camp (July 26) - Differentiation in primary school and supporting assessment capable learners in secondary school (both free of charge)

Expressing interest (via email to Joelle) is non-binding at this point. Camps will be confirmed after April 9th.

Reminder: TA Evaluations

TA evaluations are due to Dave by April 9th. Prior to sharing the TA evaluations with Dave, please make sure that you have included your digital signature for both teachers and teaching assistants.

Earth Week Projects

The last day for project submissions for the Earth Week website is Wednesday, March 31st. Could you please take a minute in your classes over the next week to do a final call for submissions OR nominate a student/student group yourself? Projects do not have to be completed by March 31; to be included on the website, projects need to be completed by April 16. Completion status can be indicated on the form. We know your students are doing great work on these issues, and we can't wait to share it with the AISC community! Here is the submission form again. Thank you!

Clarification: Teacher Collaboration Meetings Moving to Wednesday (TCM)

This is the TCM meeting for students of concern. Beginning the week of March 29th, Teacher Collaboration Meetings will be held on Wednesdays from 7:55-8:25 a.m.

Reader’s Theater

Looking for an engaging activity for your small group sessions?  Consider using reader’s theater scripts to spice up your small group sessions.  Reader’s theater is an authentic strategy to support reading fluency. Reading A-Z has many scripts available in a range of reading levels, topics and genres.  From scripted fairy tales to reenactments of historical events you will likely be able to find a script that is both engaging for your students and connects to other content areas.  Want to learn more, but not sure how to get started?  Reach out to Reader Man (ralex@aischennai.org) for more information.

Reader's theater is a strategy for developing reading fluency. It involves children in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. In using this strategy, students do not need to memorize their part; they need only to reread it several times, thus developing their fluency skills.

From our Counselors

Friday, March 12, 2021

Tomorrow marks a year that you’ve all been teaching virtually. What you’re doing is remarkable and although we would rather be teaching on campus, your dedication to making the students’ educational experience dynamic is worth celebrating. You all deserve a restful and relaxing spring break!

ES Teachers on campus on Tuesday, March 23rd

We don’t know when (if) we will get word for ES to return to campus, however, in preparation for the return, ES teachers will need to be on campus on Tuesday, March 23rd to get trained on the hybrid technology set up and more formally prepare their classroom space. I know this message is going out late on the day before spring break. To follow up, I will send a more detailed email on Monday, March 22nd. By then we might know more.

HR Teachers and Specialists Communication

HR teachers, please communicate to specialists any student concerns, especially if you know they are having trouble completing independent work, so they don’t reach out to parents unnecessarily. Thank you.

Posting Videos on Youtube (repeat announcement)

As part of tightening up our digital security, we’re looking at safer ways for teachers to post videos without using Youtube. We haven't landed on a solution yet but below is one way to make it less distracting for students who are watching your teacher videos on Youtube. Please use one of the methods below to make viewing on Youtube safer for our students. We need to do our part to make learning online as safe as possible.

If you use Youtube, share the videos as part of a presentation instead of a direct link to Youtube. You can do this with some simple HTML "magic." Here's how you can make a slight adjustment to your YouTube embed code to stop the video suggestions that appear: add ?rel=0 after the final character of the YouTube embed code. Easy!

This site will give you more details about how to do this.

You can also use Safeshare (https://safeshare.tv). There is a limit to the amount of videos you can upload on Safeshare but it’s an option for you as well. Please reach out to Priya V. if you have any questions or need support.

Another tip adding videos to Youtube safely (thank you Julia):

You can force a youtube video to play in full screen and it will simply restart the video once it has finished instead of showing ads or offering suggestions of what to watch next. You do this by adding a hyphen between the t and u in the address.  So instead of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO4XFZmvYOo  you embed https://www.yout-ube.com/watch?v=MO4XFZmvYOo:

An education, research, and policy organization dedicated to equity and promoting healthy racial identity development in youth. We support organizations, families, and educators in taking action to disrupt racism in young children.

Last week, we saw how some books that were highly regarded for a long time simply aren’t fit to be read to children and needed to be removed from publication. This week, here is a resource providing excellent options to use in class to counter and resist negative stereotypes and more. Check out the conscious kid website. Here are some highlights:

In celebration of Read Across America Day and Women's History Month, Second-Gentleman, Mr. Douglas Emhoff reads the book I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark by Debbie Levy and Elizabeth Baddeley, published by Simon Kids.

March 5, 2021

We want to thank all of you for preparing the bags with last year’s student work. We have already had about 100 bags picked up from school! Parents have expressed their appreciation in being able to get their child’s work. I also want to thank Hazel, Padma, and Peter for organizing the parent pick up. The scope of this task was larger than you’d think. Thank you again to everyone involved in making this process successful.

Important Upcoming Dates:

Running Record window: March 1st - March 26th

Growth Conferences: week of March 29th

Conferences - Prep and Conference Schedule

Preparation:

Please note that there will be no faculty meeting on March 24th. You may use this time to prepare for growth conferences. The afternoon of March 31st can now be used to schedule growth conferences with parents.

Conference Schedule:

Please connect with families this coming week about signing up for conferences in order to give parents enough advanced notice.

FYI: This is what was in the parent blog this week:

Spring growth conferences are just around the corner. The spring conference is a time for students to reflect on their growth as a learner during the year. It’s also a time for parents to recognize their child’s growth and celebrate successes and it is a time for teachers and parents to discuss student progress and next steps. You will have time to celebrate the progress your child has made across all subject areas the week of March 29th. Your child’s teacher will reach out to you to schedule a time to meet and provide details about what to expect before and during the conference.

On Thursday, April 1st, there will be no school for ES students as most conferences will happen on this day. However, teachers can’t schedule all conferences on April 1st so we are using the week of March 29th for teachers to meet with parents.

Digital Citizenship Lessons

Please contact Priya V. this week to set up a time for her to work with your students on digital citizenship lessons. This is part of our plan to tighten up our digital security and we want to make sure we are educating our students about safe online practices.

Withdrawing Students

If you hear from any of your students that they are not returning to AISC after the spring break, please let Hazel and Padma know.

AISC Earth Day Summit

From April 19 to 23, 2021 AISC will be hosting the first annual AISC Earth Day Summit.

Showcase the exciting work your students have done or are doing by encouraging them to submit a project or nominating them for the AISC Earth Day Summit.

Project details:

  • Can be any environmentally-focused, solution-oriented projects from classes, extracurriculars, or co-curricular programs (e.g., SEVAI, Vision Day, STEAM)  this school year.

  • Multimedia projects will be featured on the summit website.

  • Students will also have the opportunity to present live during the week of April 19 to a school-wide audience.

  • Students can present individually or as a group.

  • Example projects include class flipgrid videos on ideas to change the world, a photo collage of a beach clean up day, a website highlighting biodiversity loss due to the fast fashion industry, a poem about climate change.

Contact Marion (wmarion@aischennai.org) with any questions.

From the Counselors

Here are some quick activities that might spark the motor and sensory systems in the brain while at the same time help emotional regulation.

  • Funny Talk: Have students loosely touch the roof of their mouth with their tongue and begin to speak. Create a class chant to say altogether, or the teacher can address the class, modeling what he or she would like students to say.

  • Hum: There are many ways you can incorporate humming as a break or to begin class. Lead students in Simon Says or Name That Tune, or have them move their arms and legs to someone’s humming. This activity releases stress and blockages in the brain stem.

  • Name Scribbles: Have students write their favorite word four times with their dominant hand and then again with their other hand. Discuss how it felt, which they found more difficult and why, and what happened in their brains when they used their non-dominant hand.

Six Dr. Seuss books pulled over ‘hurtful’ images

Here are some resources to further explore:

The Dr. Seuss Controversy: What Educators Need to Know, “The business that manages Dr. Seuss’ work and legacy said today that it plans to stop publishing six of the author’s children’s books, due to racist stereotypes and offensive content in the stories.”

Dr. Seuss Books Can Be Racist, But Students Keep Reading Them, “Should we continue to teach classic books that may be problematic, or eschew them in favor of works that more positively represent people of color?”
